Congress has been in recess for about a month. With the exception of a handful of members of Congress who are retiring or running for higher offices, most senators and representatives on both sides of the aisle are either vigorously defending their own seats or actively campaigning for candidates in other districts and states.

The time has come for the world’s leaders to face hard truths concerning the Middle East, specifically the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Later this year, United States President George Bush, will provide for an opportunity to do so as leaders of the U.S., Israel, Palestine, and other Muslim states gather for high-level peace talks. On this, the President has nothing to lose and everything to gain, including the opportunity to achieve a positive foreign policy legacy. Approaching his final year in office, the President is able to take risks that an incoming U.S.

An Article for The Wave of Rockaway

Speaking before the Queens County Economic Development Corporation's breakfast in September, I outlined a public policy position for JFK that, in my and many others' opinions, is the best way to move forward that will create and sustain jobs but also be respectful to the communities that neighbor Kennedy airport. My position for JFK has been received well by many local interests including the constituents I represent as well as various stakeholders at JFK.

Each Veterans Day, our attempt to capture and pay tribute to what American service personnel have done for our beloved country and the world are summed up in words such as courage and duty and phrases such as to secure and protect our freedom. All, of course, are appropriate, but even collectively they do not adequately express what happens to a young man or woman in uniform, in service, in battle, away from home. It does not speak to the lives interrupted and the uncertainties that come with answering our countrys call. In my opinion, what they do is sacrifice.

A remarkable thing happened on Election Day: Voters swept Democrats to victory in the House of Representatives by nearly double the 15 seats we needed to become the majority. The electorate also gave Democrats exactly the six seats we needed to regain the Senate majority.

Five years ago the names Enron and Worldcom went from being icons of American corporate success to the poster children for corporate excess and greed. In the wake of these two scandals, where shareholders lost billions of dollars, Congress felt the need to act, or more accurately react, to preserve shareholder confidence in the capital markets. After a flurry of hearings featuring the oft repeated invoking of the Fifth Amendment, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) was born.

This Monday past America and the world commemorated the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Like most people, I still have a hard time absorbing those events.
