Washington, D.C.—Congressman Gregory W. Meeks released the following statement after Alabama voted to elect Democrat Doug Jones as their next US Senator.

"What happened last night was not a miracle or a divine intervention but it was the will of the people of Alabama that elected Doug Jones. For the first time in 25 years a Democrat has been elected statewide, Alabamians loudly and clearly rejected the racism, sexism, and bigotry that Roy Moore represented.

"Doug Jones's historic victory shows that no matter whether we identify as Republican or Democrat, we can unite around our shared moral values and principles of decency. I congratulate Doug Jones on his tremendous victory and I look forward to working with Mr. Jones in the US Congress. I know he will be a great champion for the people of Alabama."
