Rep. Gregory W. Meeks Statement on Republicans’ Partisan and Devastating Continuing Resolution
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) issued the following statement on the House Republicans Continuing Resolution:
“Today, House Republicans voted to advance a continuing resolution that will force families out of their homes, jeopardize American safety, and reduce healthcare access for veterans. These cuts are disastrous, and their impact cannot be overstated. Under the leadership of President Trump and Elon Musk, MAGA Republicans are driving our government toward unmitigated disaster.
“My democratic colleagues and I voted against this destructive funding bill because we will never agree to the Republican cuts that hurt Americans. Republicans control the House, Senate, and the White House. They have the power to pass positive legislation, but consistently make the choice to exploit their constituents to prove allegiance to Trump and Musk.
Among its many problems, this bill:
- Cuts rent subsidies for low-income Americans by more than $700 million, leaving landlords to foot the bill for or evict more than 32,000 households.
- Shortchanges the Emergency Food Program (TEFAP) by $20 million which would leave 25,000 seniors unable to participate in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
- Allows Elon Musk and President Trump to fire thousands of employees at the Social Security Administration, resulting in severe backlogs and wait times.
- Gives the Administration authority to slash or redirect funding for programs within the Veterans Health Administration, such as homelessness assistance grants, mental health care, rural health, opioid and substance abuse programs, some oncology programs, and caregivers support.
- Cuts $1.4 billion (44%) from Army Corps of Engineers Construction activities. Projects in my district, like those in Spring Creek Park and Jamaica Bay, could be impacted.
“While Democrats encouraged negotiations to work towards a responsible bipartisan bill, Republicans have forged ahead once again to rubber-stamp Trump and Elon Musk’s agenda.
“Democrats are ready, when Republicans are, to work across the aisle and find bipartisan solutions.”
