Rep. Gregory W. Meeks Statement on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter

December 29, 2024

Queens, N.Y. – Today, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) issued the following statement on President Jimmy Carter:

“It is with deep sadness that I recognize the passing of President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States. He will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and advocate for upholding the values of democracy and justice.

“President Carter was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, humanitarian, and staunch supporter of civil rights and racial equity. He worked to ensure a more representative federal workforce by appointing record numbers of African Americans, Hispanics, and women to key positions.

“As we mourn President Carter’s passing, we celebrate his dedication to mankind. In 2002, the Nobel Committee awarded him its Peace Prize, which recognized his work to advance democracy, protect human rights, promote global economic development, and peacefully solve international conflicts. We must strive to lead through his example, to exhibit strength and resolve to promote peace and respect, and to ensure that we create a better future for our children.

“President Carter was truly an outstanding and gracious man. I am praying for the Carter family’s peace and comfort during this difficult time.”
