Rep. Gregory W. Meeks Statement Condemning House Republicans’ Budget Deal Targeting Medicaid, Food Assistance and More
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) released the following statement on the House Budget Resolution:
“Tonight’s vote to advance the House Republican Budget Bill is shameful. House Republicans have demonstrated once again that they are eager to rip off hardworking, everyday American families to give tax breaks to Co-Presidents Donald Trump and Elon Musk and their billionaire buddies. They have rubber stamped a budget deal that would allow for trillions of dollars in harmful cuts to health care programs like the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicare, and Medicaid; food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that support working families; public education and so much more.
“More than 72 million Americans including children, seniors and people with disabilities depend on Medicaid. In my district alone, 312,918 people on Medicaid are at risk of losing their health care under the Republican budget plan. This includes 114,544 children under the age of 19 and 42,000 seniors over 65 in New York’s 5th district.
“Despite Donald Trump’s empty campaign promises to lower grocery bills, he has done nothing to make everyday necessities more affordable. In fact, Republicans are cutting $230 billion from nutrition assistance programs nationwide. There are 86,000 people in my district who rely on SNAP to put food on the table. It is inhumane and simply cruel that MAGA extremists are threatening Americans’ ability to feed themselves.
“House Republicans have shown they are spineless and will fall in line with Trump no matter the price to their constituents. I remain committed to defending every Americans’ access to fundamental life-saving services. When the Trump White House tried to freeze critical funding, Democrats fought back – and won. This is not politics as usual. Democrats will continue to fight every day to ensure that these Republican attacks on our democracy do not go unchallenged.”
