Rep. Gregory Meeks Honors the Springfield Gardens Highschool Football Team Historic PSAL Championship Win

QUEENS, NY– Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) honored the Springfield Gardens Highschool Football Team for winning the NYC Public School Athletic League's (PSAL) Citywide Championship.
“I want to congratulate the Golden Eagles once again on their historic win,” Rep. Meeks said. “While the odds were stacked against them, their hard work and discipline allowed them to emerge as champions. They serve as an example that with teamwork and dedication, you can accomplish anything.”
This is the first championship victory for the Queens’ Springfield Gardens’ Golden Eagles. The Congressman was joined by New York Jets Football Legend Tony Richardson to recognize the student-athletes.
“The game of football is the ultimate team sport,” Richardson said. “In the game of football it takes all 11 players to do the right thing. There’s no way you can win a championship without that kind of commitment to the sport.”
Rep. Meeks provided each player with a congressional award and previewed the championship rings with their families.
“This is a really big win,” said Jaylen Morrison, Junior, Running Back for the Springfield Gardens Highschool Football Team. “Being the first group to take them there is special. We put a lot of work in during the season and it finally paid off.”
“This is a new experience,” said Jermani Desir, Senior, Offensive and Defensive Lineman for the Springfield Gardens Highschool Football Team. “It’s exciting to receive a ring. It’s something I can take with me.”
