Meeks’ Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Texas Law S.B. 8

September 2, 2021

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) released the following statement on the Supreme Court Ruling on Texas Law S.B. 8:

“Last night’s Supreme Court inaction to allow Texas Law S.B. 8, which bans abortions after six weeks, to go into effect was a direct attack on women’s rights.By allowing the law to go into effect without a full briefing, oral arguments or providing a full, signed opinion is insulting to the rule of law.

“The law is extremely dangerous to private citizens as it also encourages lawsuits against anyone suspected of helping another person access abortion with a $10,000 reward for every successful suit.

“The federal government should explore all legal options to protect women’s rights. I fully support President Biden’s decision to launch a whole-of-government effort to see what steps the federal government can take to ensure women in Texas have access to safe and legal abortions as protected by Roe vs. Wade. Congress should also pass the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021 to ensure all women have access to safe and legal abortions as they have had for nearly fifty years,” said Congressman  Meeks.
