Meeks, Espaillat Reintroduce Resolution Honoring Victims of Flight 587
This year marked the 22nd anniversary of the second largest aviation tragedy in U.S. history
WASHINGTON, DC- Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) and Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) reintroduced their resolution honoring the victims of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587, which occurred in Belle Harbor, Queens on November 12, 2001. This year marked the 22nd year since the crash, the second largest aviation tragedy in U.S. history.
American Airlines Flight 587 was bound for Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The flight crash claimed the lives of 251 passengers and 9 crew members onboard as well as 5 bystanders on the ground.
“As we remember the victims of American Airlines Flight 587, a tragic event etched in our hearts, let us never forget the profound impact it had on our community and our nation. We reintroduce this resolution to honor and pay tribute to the memory and strength of their families. We stand united in remembrance and solidarity,” said Meeks.
“The tragedy of Flight 587 continues to have a lasting impact on the loved ones left behind and throughout our community, and each year, we stand in unity to reflect on the lives of the 265 victims as we embrace their families and loved ones,” said Espaillat. “We introduce this resolution each year in memory of the victims and to ensure their surviving family members know they are supported, and we vow to never forget the magnitude of Flight 587 and its impact on the lives of families from New York to the Dominican Republic.”
