A remarkable thing happened on Election Day: Voters swept Democrats to victory in the House of Representatives by nearly double the 15 seats we needed to become the majority. The electorate also gave Democrats exactly the six seats we needed to regain the Senate majority.

This Monday past America and the world commemorated the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Like most people, I still have a hard time absorbing those events.

My colleagues and I in the House and Senate have recessed for the month of August. Ordinarily, most of us spend part of the recess working in our respective districts or states, and part of it taking long-deserved vacations or getaways with our families who see far too little of us.
