Statement from Prescription Drug Event
Welcome. I am glad that all of you could participate in this luncheon today. As many of you know, a new law was passed recently that provides improved Medicare coverage by adding prescription drug benefits. The ongoing prescription drug coverage begins in 2006, but by June 2004 you may be eligible for a new prescription drug discount card approved by Medicare.
This discount card program has caused confusion among our senior population. In an attempt to address and clarify some of the concerns or related issues that have arisen, today's luncheon will serve as a tool to introduce you to the benefits that are available based upon eligibility requirements.
As many of you may already know, navigating the maze of available cards is difficult. Some cards may offer good deals on some of your medications, but no value for others. The specific drugs that are discounted will vary among the cards and may vary within a specific card throughout the year. Not all pharmacies will participate with all cards either. Finding the card that is right for you will require some research, but there is no guarantee that one is available that will meet your needs. With this said, I welcome all of you to become active participants in today's luncheon so that much of the confusion surrounding the discount card issue can be resolved. I urge you to pay close attention to the representatives who are here to help you today. Ask questions if you wish. Take advantage of all that you can. We all know that more should and must be done to make prescription drugs more affordable. At any cost, please do not allow yourself to leave here today without some answer as to what you qualify for come June 1st.
Joining us here today are representatives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, EPIC, Hotline at Medicare Rights Center, Health First, PhRMA, and Pfizer. Each will explain what it has to offer with regard to prescription drug card discounts.
