June 10, 2024

QUEENS, NY – Today, U.S. Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) held a celebration for Juneteenth and presented Southern Queens Park Association, Inc., (SQPA), a community project funding check for $3.5 million.

The SQPA, the only, Black-run Park in NYC, will use the federal funds to create “The Goodrich Legacy Center,” a recreation center focused on providing workforce development programs and entrepreneurship resources for the youth.

“It’s important that we recognize Juneteenth because it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the freedom of enslaved African Americans,” Rep. Meeks said. “This holiday serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and learning from our history. I am also pleased that I was able to secure this federal funding to create ‘The Goodrich Legacy Center.’ It’s critical that we provide young people in New York’s 5th Congressional District with the required resources to enter the workforce and continue contributing to their communities.”

“The Juneteenth Breakfast Celebration at SQPA was a fitting tribute to our heritage, reflecting Congressman Meeks' deep understanding of its historical significance,” said Jermaine Sean Smith, Executive Director of SQPA. “We commend his vision, which was brought to life through the enthusiastic participation of those in attendance. Events like these highlight the unique spirit of our Southeast Queens community, and leaders like Congressman Meeks exemplify the essence of community and empowerment.”

During the celebration, Rep. Meeks also recognized Jeffrey A. Coker, a maintenance supervisor at SQPA, for his longtime service.

Nearly 300 people attended the Juneteenth Celebration and Community Project Funding Check Presentation.
